Inspire Me Monday - Week Thirty Nine
Happy Presidents' Day! A day to celebrate the great ones that led our country.A day to remember all the things they stood for while they were president. And a day to have a day off from school! Both are wonderful things! As I reflected on the reason for this holiday, I also reflected on how I want to be remembered when I am gone. Then I got even more reflective, and thought how do I want to be known right now. You see, I am trying to teach my children that what is on the inside is more important than what is on the outside, but as I was watching the commercials during the Saturday Night Live 40 Year Reunion last night, I was reminded that what you look like on the outside really does matter:{Disclaimer: I am using this to make my point, but the bird comment made my husband and I laugh out loud}{Another disclaimer: My husband has a truck.}https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae_3AZQiKcU Isn't that just funny?! And the whole message must be true - I mean, it has to be, we saw it on TV! But in reality, it is often true - that appearance and what people think about you depends on outer things.I used to think it was wrong to care about what people thought. That is how I understood the Bible when it said:Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.~ Ephesians 6:7 And yet, when our children go to school or to a friend's house, we tell them that they are a reflection of our family and of Jesus. I am expecting others to notice the behaviors of my children. When I dress them in matching clothes, I am expecting people to notice the cute coordinating colors which used to happen a lot more. It is VERY hard to find things that work for a 14 year old teen girl and a 9 year old boy! And yet, I am discovering more and more that what is in your heart will change what is on the outside. So what is on the inside is important, but what is on the outside will reflect the state of the heart. And that is important too. You see, Jesus grew in favor with both God and men.Luke 2:52 says that "Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man." I do not want to be remembered for our truck, but I do want to be known as the mom who had room in her car to drive lots of kids to basketball and who always asked about the bummer and bests of their days.I do not want to be remembered for the cute orange outfits that my kids wore, but I do want them to be remembered as being clothed in kindness.I don't want to be remembered as the mom with the Pinterest perfect snacks. Okay, let's be honest, that ain't never gonna happen. I do want to be remembered as the mom who was always ready to listen and who had some offering of food: Saltines and butter are a huge hit over here! I want to serve others as though I am serving the Lord, and I want to serve the Lord well.I want to be remembered as one who made time for others. What do you want to be remembered for today?
